Project Overview

I must apologize in advance if this is an inappropriate place for this posting. I am new both to this site and the concept/discipline of InformalScience. I think, however, that the designation may be what we've been trying to articulate in what we do at Beam Camp.

Beam (http://www.beamcamp.com) is a 4-week summer program (July 18-August 16) for boys and girls aged 7-17 in Strafford, New Hampshire. Beam Campers cultivate hands-on skills in the fine and manual arts while exploring innovative thinking, design and the creative process. They transform ideas into artifacts and personal achievement into community success.

Each summer Beam commissions a Project Master to design a unique large-scale collaborative endeavor that campers produce and enjoy. The Project can range from the conceptual to the structural. We are looking for big ideas that will challenge and excite our campers and staff.

We are currently soliciting project proposals for next summer's Beam Project and hopefully start conversations that will lead to future projects. http://www.beamcamp.com/project-proposal/

Our 2007 Beam Project, the Viral Domes, on which we collaborated with artist Caitlin Berrigan, is likely to be the one that best fits the InformalScience description. Here's Caitlin's summary of the project:

"Viral capsids were magnified and fashioned into geodesic greenhouses to grow therapeutic herbs for each virus. The Beam Summer Camp commissioned this collaborative project for which I designed domes based on the protein structures of four viruses. Many viruses organize their proteins according to geodesic patterns. Among these are the hepatitis C virus, HIV, the rhinovirus (cold-flu) and the herpes virus.

Over the course of the project, the counselors and 60 campers interpreted and constructed these sculptural shelters after my designs. They learned building and creative crafts, cared for plants, discovered viruses and microbes, and explored the territories of their own bodies as fodder for art-making. They also contributed the fantastical “Beam” virus, representing their own infectious qualities. The Viral Domes became their shelters, playspaces and activity centers while still inspiring a sense of *Eeew!*"

I'd love to hear from anyone who might be interested in talking about what we do.
