The Exploratorium Outdoors workshop invites you to spend three days investigating three unique sites along the San Francisco waterfront: the Exploratorium at the Palace of Fine Arts, Ft. Mason Center, and Piers 15 and 17 along the Embarcadero. Based on the Exploratorium's evolving Outdoor Development process, the workshop will center on how site investigations -- combined with more traditional exhibit development and evaluation strategies -- can lead to new genres of outdoor exhibits, installations, and experiences.
While many invitees are from the museum field, participants will include experts from NOAA, the National Park Service, Stanford University, and other partner organizations. Together we will tour the Exploratorium and move outwards to the San Francisco waterfront where natural systems intermingle with urban infrastructures. Along the way we will examine the newly installed outdoor exhibits at Ft. Mason and move out into the City to investigate new ways of communicating a sense of place. The final day will take place, on-site, in the vast empty warehouses of piers 15 and 17, future site of the Exploratorium.
To apply, send a short bio to Steve Gennrich at sgennrich@exploratorium.edu. Feel free to send questions to the same email address (please include your phone number). You will receive an email shortly after we receive your bio. Registration is limited to 20 attendees. The workshop is free, and participants need to pay their travel expenses.
